Ask HN: How do you organize and manage database migrations?
8 by anonfunction | 0 comments on Hacker News.
When building services that rely on relational databases, in my case postgres, what are some best practices and tools to help manage schema changes? We've been using migrations and doing it all manually but it's become a bottleneck and a little bit of a nightmare with multiple consumers of the database needing to make schema changes. Another concern is multiple environments, from local development to staging and production. We're using docker-compose for local development which runs the entire "full" schema and then I'm manually applying the migration files to staging and production before we deploy. I've looked at some projects like flywaydb[1] and liquibase[2] but both are not completely free and seem proprietary. Does anyone know of another open source system that could help manage database schema versioning and migrations? Thanks so much HN, this is something that I have been struggling with. 1: https://flywaydb.org/ 2: https://ift.tt/2o6cNlU

Twitter does something consequential that Facebook will never do

In a shot aimed directly at Facebook and its baby-faced CEO Mark Zuckerberg, that the social-media site will stop running political ads beginning next month. Dorsey says that the reach of political messages should be earned, not bought. What the executive means is that political messages should gain a wide following on Twitter based on how well the message itself is received by Twitter subscribers; he says that these messages should not be forced on subscribers by having politicians pay for their distribution.

Meanwhile, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal played ...

Samsung showcases yet another smart speaker that might never be launched

Samsung showcases yet another smart speaker that might never be launched

Samsung seems to be undecided about whether or not it's worth entering the smart speaker market, and the main reason is probably , its proprietary digital assistant that's arguably inferior to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Of course, Samsung could always launch a smart speaker with support for multiple personal assistants, so it seems that it's a matter of self-pride rather than anything else. Last year, the South Korean giant revealed , the Galaxy Home, which hasn't been released on the market yet.

Although Samsung officials confirmed the smart speaker will eventually make it ...
